Fuck your personalized set of questions that could be answered in a screener
Fuck your references that could wait until you’re down to a final two
Fuck your writing samples when you aren’t poring over 500 of them
And fuck you for making applicants spend an hour-plus on bespoke materials when you’re not spending more than two minutes on their pitch!
It’s so fucking simple:
Resume. Cover letter. You can tell a lot with that alone, and that’s more than enough for the yes/no of taking a batch of candidates to screeners
Everything else is self-serving horseshit.
If you want a “follows directions” / “pays attention to detail” screener, make them include a specific phrase in the subject or body of the email.
And I assure you I’ve done enough hiring in my career to assure you this isn’t sour grapes. Get your head out of your asses. In a recession, it’s just cruel.
